Miracle Baby Deyvion Finds Forever Home After Surviving Devastating Fire
Deyvion was just an infant when a fire tore through the apartment where he slept, leaving him with severe burns across his face. Firefighters rescued the baby from the blaze, but his road to recovery was only beginning. He spent years at a specialized burns unit, enduring painful treatments and showing extraordinary resilience despite being alone for much of that time.
At age five, Deyvion’s life changed when he was placed in the foster care of Beth Plunkett, a single mother of two. “I thought he was a beautiful little boy, and I fell in love with him very quickly,” Beth told WGN9 News. After 2,545 days without a permanent family, Deyvion was finally adopted. Beth said her greatest wish for him is simple yet profound: “I want him to be, most importantly, just happy… to feel loved and to have goals and reach them and just do amazing things.”
The special day of his adoption was marked by a heartwarming reunion with the firefighters who saved him. Deputy Chief Eric Smith and his crew presented Deyvion with a custom jacket and hat, then gave him and Beth a ride to the courthouse in their fire truck. Smith told him, “He’s extremely special. We don’t always understand why things happen, but we do now.” Surrounded by love from his new family and the community that once rescued him, Deyvion’s journey is a powerful reminder of courage, resilience, and the transformative power of care.
