Doctors Warn of Rising Cases of “Scromiting” Linked to Heavy Cannabis Use

Health experts in the United States are warning about a painful condition increasingly seen among heavy cannabis users known as “scromiting.” The term describes severe episodes of screaming and vomiting linked to Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS).

Doctors say the syndrome causes intense nausea, repeated vomiting, and severe abdominal pain, sometimes beginning within 24 hours of cannabis use and lasting several days. Many patients visit emergency rooms multiple times before receiving the correct diagnosis because the condition is still relatively unfamiliar.

Treatment can be difficult, as common anti-nausea medications often do not work. Some patients report temporary relief from very hot showers or capsaicin cream, but doctors say the most reliable way to prevent future episodes is stopping cannabis use entirely.

Researchers, including teams at the University of Washington School of Medicine and George Washington University, report rising emergency visits related to CHS, especially among young users.

In October 2025, the World Health Organization officially added Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome to its International Classification of Diseases, allowing doctors worldwide to better track and diagnose the condition.
