Baby Japanese Macaque “Punch” Captures Hearts Worldwide With Viral Videos
Punch, a baby Japanese macaque who captured global attention through heartwarming videos online, continues to be closely monitored by zookeepers at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden.
Born in July last year, the young primate faced a difficult start to life. According to zoo officials, his mother rejected him shortly after birth, leaving him without the maternal care typically essential for newborn monkeys. The situation required immediate intervention from the zoo’s animal care team.
Without his mother’s attention, keepers introduced a stuffed toy roughly the size of his body to provide comfort. Punch quickly formed a bond with the plush companion, often hugging and clinging to it as a source of security.
Videos showing Punch tightly holding the oversized toy soon spread across social media, touching viewers around the world. Many were moved by the young monkey’s vulnerability, seeing the toy as a substitute for the warmth and reassurance normally provided by a mother.
As Punch continues to grow under the careful supervision of zookeepers, his story remains a reminder of the challenges animals can face early in life—and the dedication of caregivers working to give them a second chance.
