Homeowners who discover a tunnel beneath their garden shed may be seeing the entrance to a wildlife burrow. Experts say animals such as groundhogs, skunks, raccoons, or armadillos sometimes dig beneath sheds because the structures provide dry soil, shelter, and protection from predators.
These underground tunnels can grow surprisingly large and may weaken the ground under the shed, potentially leading to cracks in the foundation or uneven floors.
Specialists recommend identifying the animal first, often with a motion-activated camera, then taking steps to prevent further digging. Temporary barriers, deterrents like motion sprinklers, or live trapping—when permitted by local laws—can help safely remove the animal and protect the structure.
